The origins of Booker T. Washington High School can be traced back to April 1911, when the Norfolk School Board agreed to support one year of high school education in conjunction with elementary school at John T. West School. A second year was added in 1912, and a third year was added in 1913. In May 1914, the State Board of Education approved the high school, and the local board passed legislation that established Virginia's first certified public high school for black students.

ABOUT Booker t. Washington High School

The succeeding year, the panel was forced to relocate to the high school site on Princess Anne Road due to rapid growth. When this site was formally populated in 1917, the name was changed to Booker T. Washington High School. In 1924, a new and then modern Booker T. Washington High School was opened on Virginia Beach Boulevard, staying up to date with its own fast growth, with a student population of 1750 in grades 7–12 and an academic staff of 63 teachers.

 

Mr. Winston Douglas led Booker T. Washington High School to greater heights of glory during the 1920s and 1930s, earning the nicknames "The Mighty Booker T" and "Fighting Bookers." In 1961, Mr. Albert Preston took charge and steered Booker T. Washington High School through several major social, economic, and educational changes with unwavering dedication and quiet dignity.

 

Booker T. Washington High School entered a new phase in September of 1974. A modern $8 million dollar plant was inaugurated. On February 9th, 1975, the formal dedication took place. In December of 1977, Dr. Thomas Newby was named principal. Booker T. Washington progressed to strive for perfection and volunteerism under his leadership. Mr. Joel R. Wagner became principal after Dr. Newby retired in 1994. He was president until Mrs. Cynthia Watson took over in 2002. Until the summer of 2013, Mr. Kevin Monroe served as the top BTW administrator. Mrs. Adrian Day began her tenure as principal in the 2013-14 school year.

 

Booker T. Washington High School is the 257th best high school in Virginia and has a 50% AP® participation rate. Total minority enrollment is 94%, and 94% of students are underprivileged. Norfolk City Public Schools has five high schools, including Booker T. Washington High School. Additionally, Booker T. Washington High School is ranked #12,372 in the National Rankings.
