ABOUT NORVIEW High School

This building was the biggest high school in Virginia at the time of its construction, with a capacity of 1400 students. The construction cost $3 million, with the furnishings costing $125,000. Since then, a girls' athletic area, a guidance complex, and 12 mobile classrooms have been added. In 1999, air conditioning was installed. Norview High School was located in Norfolk County, not the city of Norfolk. Norview was the only high school in Norfolk County to have its own football stadium, which was built by Norfolk County.

Until the mid-1960s, Chittum Field's "home" side was the side closest to Chesapeake Boulevard. The grandstands opposite the traditional "home" side were made larger, including a bigger press box, due to a lack of seating capacity; as a result, this larger side became the "home" side. Chittum Field was altered once more in 1981.

This Norview has only had three principals: Mr. C.W. Johnson, Mr. C.W. Johnson, and Mr. C.W. Johnson. "Bolo" Perdue, who coached Norview's football team in the late 1940s, served as principal until 1982, when he was succeeded by Mr. Claude Sawyer, who served until 1992. The current principal, Mrs. Marjorie Stealey, was assigned in 1992 and was Norfolk's first female high school principal. On the other hand, the new Norview, which cost $31.7 million to build and $4.7 million to furnish, is now open to students. It is double the size of the building it replaces, at 288,000 square feet, and is designed to accommodate 1800 students. The construction process began in June 2002 with a groundbreaking in the middle of the football field. The facility, which includes a new stadium adjacent to Sewell's Point Road, is now finished.
