ABOUT norfolk

Norfolk, Virginia is home to the world’s largest Navy base and miles of sandy Chesapeake Bay beaches. The historic downtown district offers a complex of waterfront shops and restaurants in addition to an excellent selection of museums that include tugs, barges, sailboats, commercial vessels as well as navy ships moving through on their way out into Hampton Roads – one of the most naturally deep ice-free harbors in the world.

The city’s vibrant waterfront provides residents and visitors alike with unparalleled recreational opportunities. Visitors can find numerous restaurants, hotels and marinas on the waterfront while locals enjoy expansive walking trails, water taxis, kayaking and one of the nation’s most talked about urban lagoons – Waterside District Park. During summer months you will see hundreds of people riding bikes through the park to get from City Island to downtown Norfolk in a safe environment as well as taking advantage of other amenities such as canoe rentals. Now that temperatures are getting cooler it is time to walk those same trails!

Although Norfolk’s history dates back to its founding in 1636 by English settlers from Jamestown, the waterfront has been a major focal point of development and activity for nearly 300 years. The Olde Towne portion of downtown was settled in 1736 while the waterside area remained largely undeveloped until construction on new military bases like Naval Operating Base and NAB Little Creek began during World War II. It wasn’t until after the war that things truly began to take shape when an urban renewal project demolished over 1,500 buildings citywide as well as created Waterside Mall which is now home to Waterside District Park.

The tour will follow along some of the most recognizable historical landmarks as well as some of the oldest and newest buildings in the downtown. Along the way you can learn about early American history, Civil War encampments, slaves escaping along the Underground Railroad Trail, major shipping companies, marinas and even a book store dedicated to building wooden boats!
