Frank W. Cox High School is a public school in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in the Great Neck subdivision. It was established in 1961 as Northeast Junior High, but it was renamed after Frank Woodard Cox, the former superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools who served from 1933 to 1968.

At 2425 Shorehaven Drive, a substitute building was erected, which was also assigned as a main hurricane rescue centre. In the fall of 1983, the high school relocated to its new location. Great Neck Junior High and then Great Neck Middle School were both housed in the old building at 1848 N. Great Neck Road. In 2012, the original structure was dismantled.

 

Cox High School has a full - time faculty that is both skilled and knowledgeable and focused in setting their students up for success. Students are given countless opportunities to sharpen their skills and bring out the best in them, both in a social and academic aspect.

 

Frank W. Cox has a yearly Advanced Placement Test passing rate of 80%, with two out of every three graduating students receiving an advanced diploma. Major publications have acknowledged the high school, including Newsweek, which named it a "top" public high school. There are a variety of sports teams at Cox. Its field hockey team has won a state record 22 times. In 2018, the music program, the student newspaper, and the student yearbook all received Blue ribbon awards.

 

The school has won 55 state championships in sports. It has won the Wachovia Cup for exceptional athletic and academic achievement eight times out of seventeen times, more than almost any other school in the Virginia High School League. Also, Cox High School's WorldQuest team has won the regional WorldQuest competition (a competition in geopolitical expertise, current affairs, and geography) more times than any other institution in Hampton Roads, most recently at the World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton Roads' 2011 WorldQuest competition. However, WorldQuest is no longer held at the school. Additionally, in Newsweek's 2006 standings of American high schools, Cox is among the five Virginia Beach high schools placed in the top 2600.
